Students explore the aviation through flying models that reveal the history from 1803 right up to the present day. They are then challenged to design and build a functioning aircraft from card working alongside engineers from the Aviation industry. Airplanes will fly using radio controlled flight units. There is an option to stage an end of day air-show as part of the round up for a STEM day in school. The degree of challenge varies with the age range. Older students build unique designs while younger children learn the principles and history of flight through building with ready made parts.
A day in school with up to 40 students, working with 10 aerospace engineers can be combined with an application process. We recommend teachers advise the students to enter so that students who will benefit most take part and the volunteer engineers are working with mixed ability groups.

What?
Pupils will
- Work with a team of engineers (apprentices, graduate recruits and those further into
their career) from a variety of aerospace businesses
- Find about aviation history through interactive demonstrations
- Build a glider for a series of flight tests, engineering improvements
before each test
- Attempt to re-trim their air craft for stunt flights (turns and loop-the-loop)
- Option to go further for a whole day event . - Converting gliders for powered radio controlled flight and formation flying. This can be done as an airshow for parents after school in which pupils also present and demonstrate learning
Pre and post learning materials and non-flying model kits to make exciting timeline of aviation displays are available
30 to 60 pupils with half day and full day options
Costs
Through sponsorship* from industry partners we aim to provide a day workshop for less than £600 for 30 pupils / £850 for 60 pupils / £1000 for 90 pupils

- Demonstrations of scientific principles of flight
- Find about aviation history through interactive demonstrations and group discussions about the future of aviation
- Build and test fly a glider to understand processes and the materials and glues.
- Design and build a unique aircraft radio controlled model airplane with a specific function (eg: speed, heavy lift, slow flight)
- Stage an air-show. This can be for
parents and/or other students where they present a 'thrills and spills' airshow as well as their team's ideas for he future of flight
Costs
