Year 9 Induction Week at BTEA

Students from across the South West attended a week of activities at Bristol Technology and Enterprise Academy before joining to start their next phase of learning in Key Stage 4

The challenge was to work in teams and replicate the earliest experiments with flight by Sir George Caley (1773 -1857 'The father of Flight').

This included looking at his school books when he was a similar age to the Year 9 students

Sketches of experiments in his later notebooks. Students worked in teams with volunteer engineer to replicate Caley's inventions.

Replicating and testing Caley's earliest experiments with a 'Whirling Arm' to determine the angle of attack and size of wings needed to lift a person

The day was supported by a team of engineers from GKN, MOD, Rolls-Royce and Business West who also talked about their job roles and progression routes into engineering
