Every year Primary School children work with business volunteers to produce cardboard boats that race in the Bristol Harbour Festival
Boats are either a model of a Caravel like the ship sailed by Cabot
or a Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter
The practical activity, held in Engine Shed (a new Business Hub within Brunel's historic railway station) is complemented by history tours of the Harbour and Underfall Yard and visits to working boat yards to see a Pilot Cutter under construction.
Other school vists explore the modern Port at Avonmouth - see this link for more about the Bristol Port Company support for schools in North Bristol
Business and industry volunteers work with small teams of children and discuss the sorts of attitudes and skills that have helped make them successful
Boats are decorated with the children's own aspirations
The winning boat gets £100 - recognise this anyone?
